Making sentences in the simple past is really simple. All you have to do is to follow a simple step and there you go.

1. Affirmative Sentences

To create affirmative sentences,  you need a subject, which in simple words is the person who does the action in the sentence, then you need a verb in the simple past, and finally, you need a complement, which could be a time marker.

Rule

Subject + verb + complement

I spoke to my boss yesterday.

She worked in the morning.

2. Negative sentences

To create negative sentences, you need a subject then did not (didn't), then a verb in its base form, lastly, you need a complement

Rule

Subject then did not (didn't) + verb in its base form + complement

I did not speak to my boss yesterday.

She did not work in the morning.

3. Yes-no Questions

To create yes-no questions, you need Did, then the subject, a verb in its base form, and finally, you need a complement and question mark.

Rule

Did + subject + verb + complement?

Did you speak to your boss yesterday?

Did she work in the morning.

Notice:

a) When talking about activities in the past, for affirmative sentences you change the verb according if it is regular or irregular.

b) When talking about actions, you did not do in the past did makes the past in the sentence and the verb never changes.

c) When asking questions about past activities, Did makes the past the in the questions, likewise negative sentences, the verb does not change ever.
